Why do digital cameras look like film cameras?

I have often wondered that. My digital slr looks and feels essentially the same as my film slr. Why? Why does it have a mirror just like my film camera did? Isn't there a better way to do that now? Why does my Dslr shoot one frame at a time, couldn't it do video as well?
