Lava flows across the Kupaianaha Lava Shield (map here) toward the Pacific Ocean. The lava comes out of the earth at the Pu'u 'O'o vent and seeps along mostly under the surface until it oozes to the surface. The pressure here is tremendous, the heat incredible, rain evaporates before it hits the rocks. It is a primeval landscape, rock, heat, water, sky, ocean all blending into one.
Why is this up on Monday? Probably because I am in Washington and it is cold and raw here and I wanted to post pictures that remind me things are often different.
