Doing long exposures at night with a digital camera can cause lots of problems. There is digital noise to worry about, wind, a dog can knock over your tripod, but the biggest issue for me is battery life. How long can you keep your camera keep running?
Take this pictures of the Pan-STARRS telescope on Maui. It is a 30 minute exposure. 30 minutes takes a lot of battery power, but then the digital camera shoots a 30 minute blank frame to figure noise reduction. No wonder I owned so many batteries for my Canon 5d.
