the view from my hotel window this morning in Antananarivo
Good Morning from Antananarivo. I got back to the capitol yesterday after a multi day drive from the West Coast. Its been a long trip, 5 weeks in the field.
Tana has changed somewhat in those weeks. It is calmer now, much less tense but still very very quiet at night. Luke and I walked up to dinner last night and saw no one on the street. Tourists are staying away. The hotel in
Antsirabe that we stayed in yesterday was practically deserted. The police were out in force keeping the Tiko Boys in check.
Demonstrations in Tana have moved outside of town to the site of the Supermarket owned by the former president and that has made things here much less stressful.
In my very unscientific survey of people here, I'd say that support for the coupe exists only in Tana. But that by this point most people just want to get back to normal life.
In the drive from the coast we hit many police check points and always there was not the same level of urgency to the checks that there was the month before. No one was looking for South African Mercenaries this time. As always the police ask for money money money. As always we say no.
Bound for Paris tonight. Home in a week.
