above, the Nile River outside Moyo, Uganda from my last trip to Africa
In less than 24 hours I leave on a great assignment for South African Tourism. They want me to go to the Drakensburg Mountains and make some photographs. They'd also like to make a short film about me shooting there and my impressions of the place. It is very exciting to be heading somewhere that is new to me. I've spent a lot of time in Africa but always up on the Uganda/Sudan border. The Drakensbergs are thousands of miles away from what I'm used to and I can't wait to see something new. If anyone out there knows the Drakensburgs and thinks there is some thing I just should not miss please let me know.
So what is it going to be like? From what I can tell the landscape is open and beautiful, very cinematic. There are thousands of rock art sites, 3,000 meter tall mountains, trout streams, the second highest waterfall in the world, snow sometimes...
Wow! I've not even left the US and I am already in love with this assignment.
So what am I taking with me? My regular Canon kit (5D MK III and lenses to cover 16mm-300mm). With that wide open landscape I will also want my panorama gear, plus a couple little flashes with radios for the rock art. To keep things light no light stands and only one tripod. I'll also drop in a zoom recorder just in case I want to capture sound.
I'd post a picture of the gear strewn around my studio but it is too chaotic, it makes my stomach hurt...
OK, back to packing.
