above, climbers return to camp at 16,000 feet on Mt Ampato, Peru
I want to thank everyone who made my quick trip to Latin America so wonderful. In 5 days I spoke 6 times in Peru, Brazil and Colombia. Great audiences and great questions about my work. One of the things I enjoyed most was the intense interest in my first National Geographic story about Juanita, the Peruvian Ice Maiden. This was the first time I had returned to Peru since completing the story in 1996.
I've always maintained that NG hired me for the story because I was young and strong and likely to survive the climb. However, if I did expire they didn't know me well so wouldn't feel too bad.
It was a great assignment and wonderful to talk about it again. Below is a short video about the travails of working at high altitude.
Glad to be back.
